What is the best piece of life advice you’ve been given?
“Focus on what you can control.” It’s a simple but powerful mindset that applies equally to life and financial planning. By focusing on what’s within your control, you create clarity, build momentum, and make better long-term decisions.
What inspired you to pursue a career in financial management?
From a young age, I was fascinated by how powerful financial planning could be in shaping someone’s life. It struck me early on just how complex and overwhelming finances can feel to anyone outside the profession — and how rewarding it is to bring structure and confidence to that complexity.
What really inspires me is the human side of advice. I love building trust and connection with clients, and guiding them from uncertainty to clarity. Helping people create plans that support not only their finances but their lives is genuinely fulfilling — it never feels like just a job. It feels like a vocation.
What do you enjoy most about working with clients at Trevor Downing Financial Management?
It’s the long-term relationships. We’re not here for quick fixes — we’re here for the journey. I really value the time we spend getting to know each client: their goals, their values, their families. Then we build strategies that support them through life. TDFM also has a fantastic team culture, which means clients benefit from a joined-up, thoughtful approach.
What are some of your favourite hobbies or activities outside of work?
I train at the gym around four times a week, mixing cardio with strength work, and when the weather’s decent, I’m out on the road bike. I’m also a husband to Lucy and a dad to Ralph (6) and Arthur (4), so weekends often involve National Trust parks or skate parks with the boys.
Outside of that, I’m a bit of a finance geek. I’m always learning, reading about markets and trends — not because I have to, but because I genuinely enjoy it. I’ve never seen this as just a job. Understanding how markets move and how that knowledge can positively shape people’s futures is something I find hugely motivating.
Can you share a memorable client success story?
A couple were referred to me a few years ago — they lived locally and were feeling overwhelmed by their financial position. Between them, they had 26 separate holdings: more than 10 pensions, various investment accounts, ISAs, and scattered cash savings.
We worked together to simplify and consolidate their finances, and in doing so built a plan that enabled them to retire early — something they didn’t think was possible, but was much needed due to work-related stress. Three years on, they’re still clients, and our review sessions are upbeat and positive. The plan’s working, and it’s been a privilege to support them on that journey.
